Paint colors for house we are building (interior colors)

Posted 03-29-2010 9:57 PM by Courteneykay. 3 replies.

Hello,

We are building a house right now.  I really really need help deciding on interior paint colors.  I know that I like grays, but grays that are not too dark or too purple.  Also, my LEAST favorite green is sage. So any gray that would sometimes appear sage greeny is not for me.  I like some paint colors that I might descirbe as beachy, like a light blue-green-gray.  I would like for the accent colors to really pop if I use gray.  I will be accenting with yellows (possibly a yellow couch/or a linen that is light gray), greens (chartreuse, apple green), turquoise, auqa and baby blue.  I have some gourd lamps that are a aqua or turquoise color.  Here are some pictures of the model home that is the same layout as our house (below).  That is the furniture that they use to stage it.  All of the colors they use are Sherwin Williams.  Actually, the colors throughout the home are on the strip with Tony Taupe and Accessible Beige.

Open floor plan.   I just realized that this is the only picture that I have of the wood floors.  They are pretty dark! I love them.

This pic (above) gives a closeup of the granite and the backsplash that I will have.   As far as the kitchen goes, I decided to paint the cabinets the same color as the trim, or a similar color instead of stain.

This is the fireplace showing the granite tiles that will be used.  We have different colors of granite tile that we can use.  Again in the model home.  The trim used in this house is a bit lighter than I had in mind.

Next house, just like ours again.  It is not complete yet, but it shows the built-ins that we will have in the living room.  The wall colors used are too beige for me.  I think this one was Accessible Beige.  There was no power yet, so hard to tell exactly.

image (above) another view of the living room overlooking the back yard.  The dark hardwood floor not yet installed.

Again, a picture of the kitchen in this unfinished house.  Ours is this exact model.  I will not be staining the cabinets.  I want to paint them like the trim or a similar creamy color that is not too yellow.  Maybe like a architectural cream or something.  Also, we have options for the tile that have more stone colors, some more gray and so on.

Whew.......  I hope I have not already overloaded you with pictures........

Just to give you an idea of the kinds of things and colors that I like to decorate with.  Here are some pictures that are in my inspirational picture file:   (some pics I just like the wall color and in some I like the colors used to decorate with)

I love this picture from Living Etc. mag.  What I like about it is the yellow English roll arm sofa, the simple geometric rug, and kinda like the wall color.  Not sure if it is too light for me.  I am getting a sofa in either a yellow similar to this(not as bright as this one), or one that is a gray linen color that I can accent all kinds of fun pillows on.

This pic (above) is something I like also.  I beieve this color is Parma Gray from farrow and ball.  I have a lamp the same color as this one.  I think something very similar to the lightness of this color but the more blue or aqua or beach water version of this color would be cool too.   Does that make sense?  I also like the color of the trim next to the paint.

This is just another image using what I think of as fun color.   I am not sure but it seems like the paint color is a very light blue with a little gray.

I like the fun use of colors in this picture.  Just to give you more of an idea of what I like.  I could cover my two chairs in my living room in this linen color used here or this color for the sofa.

I love love the greens and blues used in this pic.

Back to gray wall colors.  I think something like this in the 2 pictures of the living room above.  It is not too dark and looks good against the yellow arrangement in the corner.  Of course, in this second pic the gray looks really light.  The color is Dolphin fin by Behr.

And here, I like the color of the wall and the stencil used.  I would only use this in our bathrooms and maybe the master bedroom.  Too dark for the main area.

I like that the color of the kitchen cabinets in this picture are not stark white.  The feel warm and are along the lines of what I am wanting.  Same thing in the kitchen below.

I get to pick:    (all from Sherwin Williams)

- 2 wall colors

- 1 trim color

- need to check if I can get a different trim color for the kitchen cabinets if necessary

- one ceiling color

We can pick more colors, but our builder will charge us extra :(

 - I have a dark wood coffee table that looks like this pic below.

Finally, I am at the end here.  Sorry, I know that this is a really long message.

I would love to get your suggestions for paint colors, trim, and if you think a certain color of tile different from the one pictured would be better and so on.

Thanks sooooooooo much!!!'

     Hi Courteney,

If you like the Behr Dolphin Fin color but have to use Sherwin Williams then look at these options:

7647 Crushed Ice, 7648 Big Chill, and 7671 On the Rocks

For the sea colors try these:

6211 Rainwashed (perhaps tinted at 75% if it seems too dark) or 1199 Refined Aqua

Then look at 7012 Creamy for the trim and 7003 Toque White for the ceilings

I like your inspiration photos and your ideas are inviting and beautiful! Have fun :-)

Thank you so much for your reply and color suggestions.  I swear we are thinking along the same lines here.  Just last week I got a sample pot of 7671 On the Rocks.  I painted a big poster board in that one, 7015 Repose gray, and Ancient Marble.

Also, I had marked off 6210 Window Pane as one that I liked but wasnt sure if it was too light.  So, I will try 6211 Rainwashed as you suggested, which is the next shade after window pane.

As for the Refined aqua, I dont think I know where to find that one.

I realize how off my computer monitor is today.  I was thinking that the grays that I have already sampled, Repose Gray and On the Rocks were way too light.   At night, under the artificial light they seem almost white and that is too light for me.  So, the Dolphin fin color above is lighter than it seems to me on my computer.   I guess I need to look a shade darker than those?

Also, I wanted to ask if overall you think that the colors I am looking at are good for what I like to decorate with.  Are they what you would suggest to use?

     Thanks again,

    Courteney

Ah yes, looking at colors on the computer is completely inaccurate. As much as the paint companies try, a back lit color (on the computer screen) made with light is always going to look different than a chip made with ink and or course, the actual color made with pigment. So doing the brush outs is the best way- I'm so glad you're doing that already.

The Refined Aqua is in Sherwin Williams old color deck. They don't have chips or color books for these colors anymore but they can still make them for you. Refined Aqua appears more green here then on the chip (see!). The colors from left (darkest) to right are: 1203 Edwardian Green, 1202 Posh Voyage, 1201 Magic Night, 1200 Aqua Pure, 1199 Refined Aqua, 1198 Blue Jade, 1197 Tempting Teal.

Your color palette is beautiful as are your inspiration photos- keept trusting yourself and enjoying the process. Nice work!
