Selecting Color - What to Consider?

Posted 03-17-2008 6:48 AM by Wilmington Painter. 0 replies.

Selecting a color scheme is often the most perplexing phase of home improvement. Here are a few tips on selecting colors for interior or exterior painting. First, determine the existing dominant color that you like, or wish to keep, in the room or on the house. On an exterior, this could be the color of the brick or the stone, pre-finished windows or roof. For an interior, it could be the color of the sofa, your flooring, or your window coverings. Second, determine what kind of feeling you wish to have in the room or on the home. Warm colors, such as red, orange, yellow or beige, can create an invigorating mood or add cozy intimacy to large spaces. They can help warm up a room that has northern or eastern exposure. Blues, greens, violets or grays, the cool colors, give a serene feeling and can add spaciousness to small places. The balance between light colors and deep colors should also be considered. Next, get an idea of what colors may work for you. Go online to certapro.com and play with our Color Visualizer or order our free Color Trend Guide for interior or exterior color schemes.  Keep in mind that choosing bold colors especially reds may add to your cost since they may require a primer or additional coats.  Furthermore, the pigments that are used to tint the paint to the deep base that a red requires may also impact the cost of the paint as well. Lighting is also an important consideration when determining the right color for a room. Bold colors can close in a small room with inadequate lighting.  Intense sun washes out exterior colors, so brighter colors that are appropriate in the Sunbelt might stand out like a sore thumb in Delaware area. The texture of the surface can also affect paint color. Paint looks darker on a textured surface due to shadows that are cast on the surface.  Since paint will look different in different settings we recommend applying color samples to the area you are going to paint and examining it at different times of the day and from different angles.  This ensures that you are seeing the true color on that surface.  We typically refer our Customers to Sherwin Williams for their Colors to Go collection.  These are small paint cans that are used to paint small test patches for you to test drive your color prior to fully committing to it.    Here are some interesting facts on how colors can affect our moods and emotions. Red is a very intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate and raises blood pressure. Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity and generates muscle energy. Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect and stimulates mental activity. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Green is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery and magic. According to surveys, almost 75 percent of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to all other colors. White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity and virginity. It is considered the color of perfection.   The painting professionals at CertaPro Painters, North America’s largest painting contractor, can assist you in choosing colors that create moods that fit your personality and your home.
