Exterior paint colors

 Hi, Shannon:

I just came across your website in the nick of time. We are about to paint our 1949 2/2 ranch style home in

Miami and while my husband loves dark, earthy colors, I like a "crisper", cleaner look.  Is there a compromise?

We do know that we like an "asian" feel and that we prefer the front door to be a dark rich brown rather than white,

which tends to get very dirty. Yellow is a no-no for both of us.

Attached is a picture of my home. Can you suggest colors for the walls, fascia trim (which is now yellow),

front doors and awnings? We will be going in front of our homeowner's assoc. in the next week to present our decisions.

Thanks, Shannon. Wish I had found you  a couple of months ago.

Bobbie

Hi Bobbie, When it comes to painting the exterior of your home, it's important to let the architectural elements and surroundings influence your color choices. For your home, I see a slightly Asian, slightly Island, mostly casual color plan that will emphasize your best features; the tiled roof, stone porch, and surrounding palms. I highly recommend that you consider also painting the exterior walls along with the trim and details. Let's start with a warm color for the stucco like Sherwin Williams 6116 Tatami Tan, a rich golden hue that will bring your entire house to life. Brighten the awnings a bit with Sherwin Williams 6155 Rice Grain and keep the garage door, window trim, and fascia subtle with 7050 Useful Gray. I like your idea for a dark brown door. Look at 7054 Suitable Brown for the entire front door and side light area. While this combination is decidedly earthy, the effect against the lush greens and sun washed tiles and stone will be crisp and sophisticated. And remember, from my office in California to your yard in Miami, the colors may appear quite different. Be sure to test samples so you can adjust each color for warmth and tone. Certa Pro will pick up the paints for you as part of their service, and brush sample patches on the house for you. Finally, keep this in mind, crisp clean colors and furnishings inside will complement the welcoming earth tones of the outside. This is the perfect way to bring the colors and style you both like.

I loved your suggestions! I am so glad you wrote - we were absolutely going for an asian look but didn't know how.

I am on my way to the paint store as we speak. I feel like a weight has been lifted from my chest - we were so lost...

    thanks again, Shannon!

That's fantastic news! Don't forget to send me "after" pictures. I can't wait to see it.
